A Memorial for the Canterbury Earthquakes

Status: Unbuilt Competition

The ground breaks. It pushes and drops. A memory of the event is recorded and measured with a new topography.

Two paths form.

The first, a public promenade between park and river, a path of recovery dedicated to the rebuilding of the city. Large groups can assemble here to recognize organizations and individuals focused on the continual reconstruction effort.

The second, a contemplative path along the rivers edge, a path of remembrance where memorial slabs push up from the earth, revealed only because of the grounds violent movements. Names are engraved in polished stone which are sheltered under the once flat ground that now stands precariously overhead, forcing visitors to confront the reality of that day.

At this site along the Avon River a memorial emerges from the ground.

A Path of Remembrance.                                       A Path of Recovery.                                  A Landscape that Measures the Past.
